Pelargoniums
The first is thought to have been introduced into Europe in1632, when it was brought to England by John Tradescant.We now know this plant as Pelargonium triste but at that time it had the very descriptive name Geranium indicum nocto odorato indicum because it was though to have been found in India.
There are sixteen sections listed in species
Hoarea,Seymouria,Polyactium,Otida,Ligularia,Jenkinsonia,Myrrhidium,Peristera,Camphylia,
Dibrachya,Eumorpha,Glaucophyllum,Ciconium,Cortusina,Pelargonium and Isopetalum(added when P.cotyledonis was removed from Otida to become the solitary speciumin Isopetalum.)
Pelargoniums are divided into four groups.
(1) Species Pelargoniums,including primary hybrids,Scented-leaved and Unique.
(2) Regal Pelargoniums, including Dwarf Regals and Angel Types and hybrids of the Regal.
(3) Zonal Pelargoniums, This is the largest group,whose plants are commonly called Geraniums. They can possess single,semi double or double flowers.Some of the miniature or dwarf-growing. others have attractive marked or coloured foliage.The modern F1 hybrid is a zonal type.
(4) Ivy-leaved Pelargoniums, include the hybrids between Ivy-leaved and Zonal. The blooms may be single,semi-double or double.
Fuchsias
They were discovered by the botanist Father Charles Plumier on the island of Haiti around 1689, he named the genus after the famous naturalist Leonhard Fuchs an eminent professor of medicine who was born in 1501 and died in 1566 he was a great plant lover but never saw a Fuchsia the plant named after him.
Fuchsias make up a large distinctive genus of about one hundred and ten species that grow from Colombia and Venezuela in the North to Terra del Fuego in the South and in the mountaiuns of Brazil Mexico and central America there is also a small section in Tahiti and New Zealand
They are split into sections.
Ellobium, Encliandra, Fuchsia, Hemsleyella, Jimenzia, Kierschlegeria, Pachyrrhiza, Quelusia, Schufia and Skinnera.
Cultivars come in various shapes, sizes and types.
A. Single flower has four petals only
A. Semi Double has five to seven petals.
A Double flower has eight or more petals
A Triphylla type usually has a long tube
